The master’s house for Wiess College undergraduate dormitory at Rice University serves as the residence for the college master and his or her family. The master’s house was designed to complement the new Wiess College designed by Machado and Silvetti Associates of Boston. Sited for direct student access from Wiess College, the program incorporates generous living/entertaining spaces on the first floor meant especially for both small and larger gatherings of students and faculty. Living spaces expand into two courtyards, allowing for privacy and as an extension of the inside space for larger gatherings. The second floor, with three bedrooms, is programmed as the private living quarters for the master’s family. The 3,200 square foot, light frame structure is clad in a combination of stucco and naturally sealed cedar siding. The design incorporates sustainable features and achieved LEED For Homes Silver certification.
