Prior to renovation
The George V. Rotan house, completed in 1936, was designed by John F. Staub, Houston’s leading residential architect of the early twentieth century. Because only the kitchen had been altered, the challenge was to preserve its historic and architectural distinction while updating the house for contemporary needs. The program included a new kitchen, expanded breakfast area with a bay window that echoes the living room’s original bay window, shelving in the dining room, expanded master bathroom and miscellaneous improvements throughout the house, including a new mechanical system. The altered entry façade was carefully composed to adhere to the house’s original proportions. High performance insulation was added to meet energy efficient standards and outdated wiring was replaced.
