Prior to renovation
This 1920's Craftsman cottage presented the architect and owners with a series of deteriorating conditions that exceeded the usual problems associated with age and neglect. Its exterior had been insensitively altered by a one-story bedroom addition, an enclosed side porch and an awkward front portico. Multiple incongruous changes had similarly affected the interiors. The bedroom addition and a dilapidated garage in the backyard were demolished to make way for a new garden, pool, and painted steel carport. The side porch was completely rebuilt, and a new bowed copper canopy replaced the former entry portico. Extensive work on the inside of the house involved remodeling the kitchens and bathrooms, restoration of steel casement windows, plaster walls, pine paneling, wood trim, oak floors, doors and hardware, along with the unobtrusive addition of zoned air conditioning, new lighting, cabinets and bookshelves.
