Stern and Bucek Architects
Hester + Hardaway
The design for the Daniel house complements that of its neighbor, the Lummis house, another Stern and Bucek commission. Clad in cypress, this house’s massing and siting respond to that of its brick neighbor while clearly establishing its own identity. The two houses share a backyard, allowing the owners, who are sisters, and their families a communal space that also serves as an organizing element. An entry courtyard and an interior courtyard complete the site organization and provide generous light and visual connections between rooms on both floors of the house. A series of glazed and screened spaces adjoin the courtyards, allowing for natural ventilation as well as a sense of transparency that does not compromise privacy. Glass on the west façade is shielded from the sun with projecting sunscreens.
