Caddell and Chapman Apartment | Houston, Texas
Stern and Bucek converted four apartments on the top floor of the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Houston to one apartment for a professional couple with two young children. The apartment is arranged in three zones: the living, dining and kitchen areas in the center; a two bedroom children’s wing on one side; and library, media room and master bedroom suite on the other. A series of linked spaces along the outside window wall take maximum advantage of spectacular views of the city’s skyline and Discovery Green, Houston’s downtown park. Major repositioning of existing infrastructure, including roof drains and mechanical ducting, allowed the architects to raise the ceiling in the living areas to be proportional with the open plan. A service zone that incorporates a wine cellar, bathrooms, storage, and mechanical closets aligns with the public corridor side. To maximize both functionality and flow, rooms are divided by white oak veneer storage units that contain a combination of bookshelves, cabinets and closets.
